How Far Can an Ethernet Cable Run? Cat6 and the 100-Metre Limit

A standard office copper data cabling design uses a 90-metre limit for the permanent link and 100 metres for the complete channel, including patch cords. This does not mean every Ethernet application supports the same distance and speed on every cable. In particular, distinguish 1 Gbps from 10 Gbps on Cat6; assess the route, all connection components and the test results together.

What is the difference between 90 and 100 metres?

The permanent link is the fixed section between the patch panel and data outlet in a typical office. The channel also includes the patch cords at the switch and end device. Fluke Networks defines these as separate scopes. Do not assume that adding equipment cords to a 100-metre fixed installation keeps the complete channel within its standard limit.

The measurement is not the straight-line distance between rooms. Cable tray bends, vertical routes, the path inside the cabinet and spare cable all contribute to the actual length. Thin or long patch cords and temperature can affect the permitted design; check the product and application conditions separately.

What speed does Cat6 support at 100 metres?

CommScope describes Cat6 supporting 1 Gbps up to 100 metres, with 10GBASE-T limited to shorter runs. Do not turn “Cat6 works at 100 metres” into an automatic 10 Gbps guarantee. Outlets, panels, patch cords, ports and site conditions must match the target as well as the cable category.

For a 100-metre channel targeting 10 Gbps, review the category and system choice separately. The existing Cat6 and Cat6A selection guide covers this decision. This article focuses on the planned link’s distance budget rather than comparing categories.

An example distance budget for office data cabling

The following hypothetical record is intended for the survey stage, not as a measured customer project or acceptance report. Recording the fixed link and patch cords separately reveals which limit is exceeded, even when the total seems short.

Permanent linkTotal patch cordsChannelInitial assessment
84 m8 m92 mWithin the basic distance budget; testing must confirm compliance.
94 m8 m102 mRedesign both the permanent link and the complete channel.
88 m14 m102 mReassess patch cord length and the channel budget.

The quotation and handover record should include the link ID, target application, estimated fixed length, patch cord specifications and measurement file. Passing the length requirement alone does not mean every electrical test passes. Review the measurement scope with the data cabling test report guide .

What are the options beyond 100 metres?

First assess whether moving the cabinet or changing the route can keep the link within the standard copper channel limit. Another switch can create separate Ethernet segments, but the intermediate location needs planned power, security, environmental conditions and maintenance access. A passive RJ45 coupler does not regenerate the signal or reset the distance budget.

For fibre, the selected fibre, optical module and equipment ports jointly determine reach. Fibre carries data; power for the end device must be provided separately. CommScope’s extended-reach resources distinguish fibre, a new distribution point and application-specific solutions. Do not generalize one extended-reach copper product’s claims to every Cat6 cable; request its supported speed, power and component conditions.

Why does a long Ethernet cable connect at a lower speed?

A lower-than-expected link speed cannot be explained by length alone. Check the end port’s speed, patch cord, wire connections, damage and measurement results. A lit link LED does not prove the design meets the specified category and application requirements. An internet speed test alone is not a certification test of the fixed cabling either.

Record the intended link speed and identify the affected link first; compare it with a known suitable patch cord and port. Then request testing of the installation to the required scope. Before replacing the cable or adding arbitrary joints, distinguish active equipment, end connections and fixed cabling as possible causes.

Add distance to the survey plan for your Istanbul office

Istanbul data and structured cabling service — alongside the number of outlets, specify the longest link’s route, target speed and required handover measurement. Office cabling survey checklist helps gather these details. The quotation can then reflect a usable connection design rather than just total cable metres.
