Cat6 or Cat6A: An Office Cabling Decision Guide
The choice between Cat6 and Cat6A is not determined by cable price alone. Assess the target Ethernet application, channel length, component compatibility, routing and acceptance measurements together. State higher-speed requirements explicitly for a new office; a category printed on the cable is not a performance guarantee for the whole system.

First ask which connection you need to support
Do not assume that a desk, access point and server connection have identical requirements. Record the intended application and service-life expectations. The cable category does not define the entire application path; endpoint devices and active network ports must also support the target.
Leviton describes Cat6A systems supporting 10GBASE-T over a channel of up to 100 metres. This does not allow unlimited patch cords to be added to the fixed cabling. Do not assume the same length and environmental conditions for higher-speed applications over Cat6; request a product- and application-specific assessment.
An example needs-based decision matrix
This table is an original decision framework. It does not guarantee a category’s suitability for a particular office without measurement.
| Situation | Question to ask | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|
| New office and long service life | What future application is required? | Design and compatible system list |
| Existing Cat6 links | Which links will carry the target application? | On-site assessment and result file |
| PoE devices | Are power, bundling and environmental conditions suitable? | Product and installation instructions |
| Restricted cable route | Can the selected cable be installed physically? | Diameter, pathway fill and installation assessment |
Category and shielding are different choices
Cat6A alone does not specify a shielded or unshielded construction. Read the product structure, module and panel compatibility, environmental conditions and installation requirements together. If a shielded system is considered, qualified specialists should assess earthing and bonding design.
Squeezing a cable into a narrow pathway or ignoring its bend requirements is not a valid price advantage. A catalogue category cannot compensate for poor installation. Request the selected product’s document for exact diameter and installation limits; do not copy another model’s values.
How do you check shielding codes in a quotation?
U/UTP, F/UTP and S/FTP are not speed classes replacing Cat6 or Cat6A categories. They describe cable screening construction. The distinctions below follow Fluke Networks’ terminology explanation; procurement must use the datasheet for the exact product code.
| Construction | Overall screen | Twisted-pair screen |
|---|---|---|
| U/UTP | None | None |
| F/UTP | Foil | None |
| S/FTP | Braid | Foil around each pair |
Quotation check record
- Cable product code: [manufacturer / model / category / screening]
- Jack and panel codes: [compatibility document / installation instructions]
- Project assessment: [route / environment / responsible person]
- Handover evidence: [link ID / test scope / results file]
Example: two quotations both saying Cat6A does not make U/UTP and F/UTP interchangeable. Compare component compatibility and installation scope for the same application target. This record is Quad Bilişim’s original comparison template; it is not manufacturer approval, a site measurement or a standards compliance certificate.
Compare the component chain, not just the cable
The quotation should identify cables, jacks, patch panels and patch cords by separate product codes. Combining a Cat6A cable with lower-category modules does not automatically preserve the system target. Fluke Networks stresses selecting the correct test limit and component levels.
For example, the Leviton AC6U-DCA-305BU2 document identifies its U/UTP construction and system warranty conditions. This is a specific documentation example, not a claim that Quad Bilişim is an authorised installer or will provide a manufacturer warranty for your project. Compare alternative brands against the same requirements and documents.
Do not replace existing cables without assessing them
Neither replacing working infrastructure solely because a newer category exists nor retaining it indefinitely because a link light is on is evidence-based. Identify which links will support which applications, then select the necessary tests and risk assessment.
The guide to reusing existing cables addresses that decision separately. When accepting a new installation, also check the scope and limit in the test report . Base the final decision on written requirements and verified handover results, not the most expensive option or shortest catalogue sentence.
Frequently asked questions
Does buying Cat6A automatically increase office internet speed?
No. The internet circuit, active devices, application and entire connection path affect the result. Category selection alone is not an internet-speed commitment.
