Open-Plan Office Cabling: When Do You Need a Consolidation Point?
A consolidation point (CP) is a planned passive interconnection between fixed horizontal data cabling and the cable continuing towards the work area in an open-plan office. When desks move frequently, it can help preserve the longer cable route. It is not a switch that adds ports and does not extend speed or distance limits. In a small office with a stable layout, a direct run to each outlet may be simpler.

Identify the area that will change before choosing a box
Base the decision on which parts of the office will change rather than only its current desk count. A meeting room may remain fixed while a team area is subdivided. Mark the expected changes on the floor plan instead of forcing both areas into the same connection approach. Belden describes consolidation enclosures as solutions that help adjust layouts while leaving most horizontal cabling untouched; this does not guarantee cost savings in every project.
For rented offices in Istanbul, also record access conditions for raised floors or ceilings and the building management's permitted working hours. A secured point accessible for maintenance does not offer the same operating conditions as a box forgotten behind furniture. Assess its location using the existing cable routing guide as a reference.
Decision table: direct run, CP or switch
| Need | Option to assess | What to record in the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Desks and outlets stay fixed | Direct run from panel to outlet | Route and future access |
| A desk group changes within the same zone | Planned CP with a continuing outlet run | Section that will change and access to the box |
| More active network ports are needed | Switch with a separate cabling design | Power, uplink, management and maintenance |
This table is neither a product recommendation nor a design replacing a standard. A CP does not turn a connection into several independent Ethernet ports. Installing an arbitrary RJ45 coupler does not create a documented consolidation design. The fact that active equipment fits in the same enclosure does not make a passive CP equivalent to a switch.
How should placement and distance conditions be checked?
Leviton's 2026 technical note specifies no more than one CP in the same horizontal run, no patch-cord cross-connections inside the CP and no direct device connection to the CP. The appropriate continuing run and work-area outlet are part of the design. Keep this CP plan distinct from the MPTL approach that runs a cable directly to the device when comparing the approaches.
Do not take a distance number out of context. Leviton recommends a distance of 15 metres from the distributor. Fluke Networks' 2014 explanation discusses the 15-metre advice in an informative annex of an older standard and the measurement effects of closely spaced connections. These should not be presented as an unchanging legal obligation for every current project. Verify the applicable standard edition and the manufacturer's system conditions. Adding a CP does not reset the existing permanent-link and channel distance budget for the installation.
A fill-in zone decision record
The record below is Quad Bilişim's original planning template. Complete the bracketed fields during the survey; it is not an actual client project or measurement result.
- Zone and drawing reference: [floor / team area / plan revision]
- Expected change: [desk move / partition change / fixed use]
- Choice and rationale: [direct run / CP / active distribution]
- Access: [cover location / responsible person / permitted hours]
- Link mapping: [panel port / CP identifier / outlet identifier]
- Acceptance evidence: [application target / test scope / file reference]
At handover, the drawing, label and measurement file should identify the same link. Changing only the plan after a desk move is insufficient; the records and test scope of the changed connection must also be updated. This guide addresses the layout decision; fire, electrical, building compliance and product installation conditions require project-specific assessment.
