What Is MPTL? Direct Cabling to an Access Point and Test Scope
MPTL is a link model in which the device end of fixed horizontal cabling terminates in a modular plug rather than an outlet. It can be considered for fixed devices such as access points or cameras where an outlet and equipment cord are impractical. Simply attaching any RJ45 plug does not complete this choice: product compatibility, link model and the endpoints covered by field testing must be defined together.

Name the link model first
An office desk outlet with a patch cord and a plug running directly to a ceiling device do not use the same handover definition. MPTL is neither a cable category nor a Wi-Fi performance feature. Cat6A indicates a category; MPTL describes how the link terminates.
Leviton’s application note describes MPTL as a permanent link with a jack at one end and a plug at the other. This guide does not replace the access point coverage plan ; it focuses on the cable termination’s handover scope rather than device location.
Is the device-end plug included in the test?
Fluke Networks’ DSX documentation describes MPTL testing with a permanent link adapter at the jack end and a category-matched patch cord adapter at the plug end. Using only a channel adapter at the remote end can produce an inappropriate, optimistic result because the final mated plug-and-jack connection is excluded from the measurement.
Do not look only for “PASS”. The report’s link model, selected test limit and adapters at both ends should describe the same physical installation. Do not automatically apply this product family’s method to another tester; check that manufacturer’s current instructions. This article makes no claim that Quad owns a particular tester or provides a manufacturer’s warranty.
An example handover record
The following hypothetical record helps a project team notice missing information. AP-02 and PP-01/18 are not a real customer project. Do not fill the example fields as though measurements had been performed.
| Field | Example record | Check question |
|---|---|---|
| Line ID | PP-01/18 → AP-02 | Do the label and report identify the same link? |
| Termination | Jack → field-terminable plug | Does the report’s model match the physical endpoints? |
| Test setup | Test limit and adapter references to be added | Is the device-end plug included in the measurement? |
| Evidence | Report file, date and change record | Does the file represent the state after final installation? |
When a plug is replaced, do not treat the old report as evidence of the new state. Link the changed endpoint, work date and recheck result to the cabling change log .
When should you request clarification?
A quotation specifying MPTL with only a generic channel result in the report, or no adapter information, requires clarification. This does not automatically make every file incorrect; match the test scope to the manufacturer’s method and project requirements before making an acceptance decision.
Cable certification does not verify all aspects of Wi-Fi coverage, device software or application speed. Consider these distinctions alongside the general data cabling test report guide .
Clarify the link scope in your Istanbul office
Istanbul structured and data cabling service — when describing requirements, share device locations, the preference for outlet-based or direct connection, and the report model required at handover. The aim is to make different test scopes in two similar-looking cabling quotations comparable.
