What Is a CCA Cable? Verifying Copper Conductors in Office Data Cabling

CCA cables utilize copper-clad aluminium conductors; they are not the same as cables with copper conductors. When dealing with office data cabling, do not accept the material based solely on a "Cat6" label or the fact that a connection is established. Instead, verify the manufacturer’s full product code, the declared conductor material, and the testing scope to ensure it meets project requirements.

CCA conductors and the CPR "Cca" fire-reaction class are two different things.

In a proposal, the term "CCA" (in capital letters) may stand for "Copper-Clad Aluminium"—referring to the conductor material. Conversely, "Cca" in CPR (Construction Products Regulation) documentation refers to a fire-reaction class. A cable can have copper conductors while also falling under the "Cca" fire-reaction class; the presence of "Cca" does not imply an aluminium core. Always interpret such abbreviations in the context of the specific field or section within the document.

In the Nexans LANmark-6 U/UTP product family, options such as Cca, Dca, and Eca are listed as distinct references. These classifications do not serve as a substitute for a formal declaration of the conductor material. For further details regarding fire-reaction classes and cable jacket specifications, Guide for verifying LSZH and CPR documentation please refer to the additional documentation.

Why is the establishment of a connection not sufficient proof?

Fluke Networks highlights issues regarding resistance and resistance unbalance in copper-clad aluminum (CCA) cables. The fact that a link can transmit data does not prove that the cable meets the intended structured cabling performance standards or power delivery requirements. Conductor characteristics must be evaluated, especially for lines used for Power over Ethernet (PoE).

A simple wire-map (pinout) check is not the same as a DC resistance measurement. The report should clearly indicate which parameters are included in the test profile used by the measurement device. A single "pass" or "fail" result is not sufficient to definitively determine the chemical composition of the conductor; product identification and measurement findings must be evaluated together. Similarly, the weight of the box or the conductor surface color are not reliable methods for verification on their own.

A structured verification record for material acceptance.

The following record ensures that the procurement team and the technical team are referring to the exact same product. For example, if a quote simply states "Cat6, 305 meters," the conductor specification field should be left blank and clarification requested; missing information should not be filled in based on assumptions.

FieldEvidence to be recordedOpen question
IDManufacturer, full product code, batch number, and reel labelDo the quoted product and the delivered product have the same reference?
ConductorManufacturer’s declaration regarding conductor material and constructionIs it copper or copper-clad aluminum (CCA)?
Project scopePermanent link or patch cord, target application, specification clauseIs the proposed product intended for this use?

decisionApprover, date, document link, open objectionWas approval granted despite missing evidence?

This table is an original example record designed by Quad; it is not a laboratory report or a manufacturer’s certificate. If the conductor declaration is ambiguous, keep the material acceptance as an open record. Any decision to replace a product must be traceable through the proposal and delivery documentation.

How should you proceed if you suspect an issue with an installed line?

Before removing an active link, collect the label, existing reports, and manufacturer documentation. If an inspection or sampling is required, plan it in coordination with the necessary service interruption and authorization; do not cut a cable that is energized or currently in use. The cause of a failure may not be limited to the conductor; connections and test conditions must also be evaluated.

Guide to data cabling test reports the scope of measurement, Guide to comparing proposals and the items delivered. This document does not constitute a legal compliance certification for any product in Turkey, nor does it imply a manufacturer’s warranty or a claim that Quad possesses specific testing equipment.
